General Description:

General Description:

The Director of Children’s Ministry will provide oversight and planning of program and ministry for Children aged PreK – 5th grade. This person will direct programs that lead and inspire the faith of children at UCC. The Director of Children’s Ministry will continue to build relationships with children and their families to nurture involvement in a dynamic Children’s Ministry.

Primary Duties:

• Design and implement Christian education curriculum, through participation in worship and “hands-on” leadership of Children’s Ministry and Sunday School. Most activities will take place on Sunday.

• Recruit and collaborate with volunteers to plan and implement dynamic programs for the spiritual and faith formation of children.

• Train volunteers, and staff for all children’s activities.

• Build relationships and effectively communicate with the congregation to promote the children’s worship and spiritual education.

• Collaborate with the Pastor and other staff members for special programs, worship, and other activities.

• Synchronize and co-ordinate children’s programming with the Youth Director’s programming.

• Designate, coordinate, and educate any volunteers to take over programming due to missed time or vacation.

• Plan and monitor expenses against budget, including submission of annual budget requests and estimating revenue/expenses for activities.

Secondary Duties:

• Coordinate fundraising activities that support the Children’s Ministry.

• Coordinate, plan, and develop the children’s overall program, weekly activities, and one-time annual events.

• Encourage children’s participation in other facets of the life of the community of faith including worship, choirs, educational opportunities, additional programming, Montana-Northern Wyoming Conference activities, summer church camps, and service projects.

• Attend UCC professional staff meetings (always) and cabinet meetings (when required).


Must pass a background check before employment

Must follow UCC policies and procedures as found in the Handbook.

Qualities and Capabilities Needed:

Training in children’s education or equivalent experience

Experienced in working with volunteers

Respect for the faith, affirmations, and traditions of the United Church of Christ.

Is a person of faith.


Comfortable with technology.

Excellent verbal and written communication.

Creative and open to exploring new ideas.

Creates opportunities for children to share their Christian faith with others.


The Director of Children’s Ministry is an hourly, 9-month position for 13-15 hr/week from September – June. This position requires work on evenings and weekends.


Compensation is determined by the Cabinet, plus event travel reimbursement and parking permit.  This position is not eligible for additional benefits.  The salary range for this position would range between $20- $24 per hour DOE.  

Evaluation and Accountability:

The Director of Children’s Ministry will receive supervision, guidance, and support primarily from the Pastor. In the absence of a pastor, they will report to the Management Task Force of the UCC Cabinet. This person may also receive support and guidance from other staff and church leaders. An in-depth evaluation will be held at three months and annually thereafter.
